Understanding Room Modes
Why bass sounds boomy in corners
Room modes are collections of resonances that exist in a room when the room is excited by an acoustic source (your speakers). They cause peaks and nulls in the frequency response at different locations.
- Axial Modes: Occur between two parallel surfaces (strongest).
- Tangential Modes: Involve four surfaces (half as strong).
- Oblique Modes: Involve all six surfaces (weakest).
"If your bass disappears in the center of the room but is overwhelming in the corners, you are experiencing room modes."
